Shoji Kawamori

Animation Director. Mecha Designer. Vision Creator. Thematic Producer for EXPO 2025 Osaka Kansai. Chairman of the Anime Tourism Association.

Best known as one of the original creators of SUPER DIMENSION FORTRESS MACROSS, Shoji Kawamori has been involved with the franchise ever since the original television series in 1982. In 1984 he made his directorial debut with SUPER DIMENSION FORTRESS MACROSS: DO YOU REMEMBER LOVE? at the age of 23. MACROSS would go on to have a profound and lasting impact, with its influence being felt around the world.

Apart from MACROSS, Shoji Kawamori has also created various original anime, including GENESIS OF AQUARION, SPRING AND CHAOS, EARTH GIRL ARJUNA, THE VISION OF ESCAFLOWNE and more. His extensive output also includes creative contributions to DIACLONE’s Battle Convoy (It became the basis for TRANSFORMERS’Optimus Prime), GUNDAM 0083: STARDUST MEMORY, GHOST IN THE SHELL, ARMORED CORE, THUNDERBIRDS ARE GO, CALL OF DUTY®: MOBILE,DAEMON X MACHINA and SONY“AIBO”『ERS-220』, to name just a few.

Most recently, in 2020, he was appointed as a thematic project producer for EXPO 2025, OSAKA, KANSAI, JAPAN. He succeeded Yoshiyuki Tomino, the creator of Gundam, and currently serves as the president of the Anime Tourism Association,a general incorporated association.The latest project is the original animated feature film“labyrinth”, scheduled for theatrical release in January 2026.
