On the other side of the door, there was time in its entirety…
Suzume is a coming-of-age story about 17-year-old protagonist Suzume. The story is set in various disaster-stricken locations throughout Japan, where Suzume must close the doors before they cause more devastation. Suzume's journey begins in a quiet village in Kyushu (located in southwestern Japan) when she encounters a young boy who tells her: "I'm looking for a door." Suzume finds a single weathered door that stands amidst the ruins as if it were protected from whatever catastrophe may befall it. Apparently attracted by its power, Suzume reaches for it and the gates begin to open one after another all over Japan, unleashing destruction upon anyone nearby. Suzume will have to close these portals to avoid further disaster.
Never-before-seen landscapes, encounters and farewells... Endless challenges await Suzume on her journey. Despite all the obstacles in her path, Suzume's adventure casts a glimmer of hope on our own struggles against anxiety and limitations that we can find in everyday life. This story of closing doors that connect our past to the present and future will leave a lasting impression on all of our hearts.
